Communication Sciences and Disorders M.Ed. (M.S. degree beginning Fall 2014)
Each year a cohort of 25-28 master’s degree students enroll in the fall semester, which allows individualized academic and clinical experiences to meet unique needs and interests.
What you’ll learn
You’ll receive an intensive field-based education that prepares you to implement the best practices in the profession, to communicate effectively with your colleagues and clients, to work collaboratively with other professionals who serve individuals with communication disorders and their families, and to pursue opportunities for advanced degrees.
This commitment of our faculty to your studies means that you, as a graduate of the Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) program, will be sought and valued by schools, hospitals and rehabilitation programs throughout the state and region. In the classroom, you will be engaged in learning through lectures, discussion, small group activities, hands-on experiences, readings, individual assignments and group projects.
Clinical practicum consists of three semesters of on-campus experience in the Georgia State Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic and two semesters of off-campus practicum. In the third semester of on-campus practicum, you also participate in a “mini-internship” at an off-campus facility one day of the week throughout the semester.
During off-campus internships, you are placed one semester at a school and one semester in an adult medical setting. Internships are full-time Monday through Friday throughout the entire semester.
Educational Psychology (M.S.)
What you’ll learn
The M.S. program in educational psychology involves the application of the principles of psychology to the systematic study of education.
A major in educational psychology allows students to emphasize such content areas as learning, instruction, life-span development, applied behavior analysis, cognition and socialization.
The educational psychology program prepares students to pursue a variety of career paths, including research, evaluation and the applied practice of a number of disciplines.
The program will further develop the expertise of students who are certified or licensed in teaching, nursing, speech pathology or physical therapy, by studying the psychological principles of development and learning.
Educational Psychology Concurrent
A major in educational psychology allows a student to emphasize such content areas as learning, instruction, life-span development, applied behavior analysis, cognition, and socialization.
The program prepares a student to pursue a variety of career paths, including careers as faculty members in colleges and universities, as researchers in departments of education in government and business, and as professionals in training and research programs in government and industry.

Course Description and Classes
Multiple and Severe Disabilities M.Ed.
What you’ll learn
Applicants to the M.Ed. Multiple and Severe Disabilities program are able to pursue the following concentrations: Special Education Adapted Curriculum (Intellectual Disability), Special Education General and Adapted Curriculum (Autism Spectrum Disorders), Special Education Deaf Education, Early Childhood Special Education, Special Education Physical and Health Disabilities (Orthopedic Impairments). The master’s degree program contains those courses required for professional certification within each area listed. Students are provided coursework and practicum experiences resulting in knowledge of characteristics, curriculum, instructional strategies, and classroom management procedures to teach children with moderate, severe, and profound intellectual disability; autism spectrum disorders; physical and health disabilities (orthopedic impairments); hearing loss; or young children with disabilities.
Initial Certification in Multiple and Severe Disabilities
This non-degree program prepares students seeking only teacher certification. Applicants to the initial certification non-degree Multiple and Severe Disabilities program are able to pursue the following concentrations: Special Education Adapted Curriculum (Intellectual Disability), Special Education General and Adapted Curriculum (Autism Spectrum Disorders), Special Education Deaf Education, Early Childhood Special Education, Special Education Physical and Health Disabilities (Orthopedic Impairments).
Preschool Special Education Endorsement
Program applicants must be fully certified teachers. Nine semester hours of coursework are required for endorsement in preschool special education for professionals holding teacher certification in early childhood education, special education, or speech language pathology. Completion of the coursework requirements below, as designated, qualifies the students for endorsement in preschool handicapped education.

Behavior-Learning Disabilities M.Ed.
What you’ll learn
The M.Ed. major in Behavior/Learning Disabilities provides students with the depth of knowledge and breadth of skill in educating students with high-incidence behavior and learning disabilities (e.g., learning disabilities, emotional disturbance, ADHD, speech and language disorders and mild intellectual disabilities) required of a “master teacher.”
When entering this program, the student will already hold a certificate in special education based on an accredited college/university program or will complete the approved certification sequence prior to enrolling in master’s level courses. This advanced program emphasizes research-based strategies, effective pedagogy and data-based decision making.
Through this course of study, students will learn how to select appropriate curricula, employ effective methods of instruction, make assessment based decisions and utilize effective classroom and student management procedures. After students have finished this program they will be prepared to work collaboratively and exhibit the highest standards of professionalism while maximizing pupil learning and development.
